DHEA THERAPY
WHAT
IS DHEA?
The
compound dehydroepiandrosterone is better known as DHEA. It is often
called the mother hormone because it is produced in greater abundance
by the adrenal glands than any other hormone. It is also produced to a
lesser extent by the ovaries, testes and brain.
WHAT DOES DHEA DO?
The body uses DHEA as a buffer hormone or as a storehouse from which the body can produce
other hormones such as estrogen or testosterone when needed. However,
in recent years, DHEA research has indicated that this hormone may
have important therapeutic benefits in such areas as cardiovascular
disease, auto-immune diseases, cancer, chronic fatigues, fibromyalgia
and may have anti-aging properties.
WHY MAY I NEED TO
TAKE DHEA?
There is a
progressive decrease in the production of DHEA as one gets older,
usually between the ages of 30-40. Low levels of DHEA have been
associated with many degenerative diseases.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO TAKE DHEA?
Only your physician
can help you make that decision. Your doctor will need to check your
blood level of DHEA in order to decide if you need to take a
supplement and if so, what strength.
DOES DHEA REQUIRE A PRESCRIPTION?
Until recently DHEA
was only available by a doctor's order. Even though some strengths can
now be purchased without prescription we still recommend obtaining
your DHEA under the supervision of your doctor. Only prescription DHEA
will be reimbursed by your insurance.
SHOULD EVERYONE TAKE DHEA?
Men and women under
the age 30 probably do not need to take DHEA. Also, men who have had
prostate cancer or women who have had breast cancer should not take
DHEA until research demonstrates safety.
